Osaka Castle is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks and it played a major role in the unification of Japan during the sixteenth century. The main tower of Osaka Castle is situated on a plot of land roughly one square kilometer. It is built on two raised platforms of landfill supported by sheer walls of cut rock.
The castle grounds, which cover approximately 60,000 square meters (15 acres), contain thirteen structures that have been designated as important cultural assets by the Japanese government.
It’s pretty impressive to be standing in front of it. We also took the opportunity to climb the 8 storeys to the top and wall around the the upper level view point. We couldn’t have asked for better weather as well! We ended up spending around 2 hours here, longer than I tonight we’d stay.
